The following was taken from last week's BEEF Cow-Calf Weekly email...

R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard surprised me this week with his comments at an Australian Beef Association summit. The following is taken verbatim from the press release I received:

“The United States has the worst protection against BSE (mad cow) of any country,” Mr. Bullard told the summit. “We support you completely in your efforts to prevent your government from resuming trade with countries with BSE…”

Is this a correct quote?

I believe the release referred to is the one available here.  If that is so, then this is not a direct quote. Also available on that page is also a link to Bill Bullard's presentation.

That doesn't look like the same press release to me. BSE isn't mentioned in it at all.

As for "What has R-Calf done?", the paper says that R-CALF wrote letters, submitted comments and requests, etc. but doesn't say a word about whether anything came of all those letters, etc. Did any of it result in improvements for beef producers?

I also saw this quote on your website: "R-CALF USA is pleased with today’s 60-39 Senate vote in favor of significant financial reforms". This bill was a bad piece of legislation, that's why every conservative senator voted against it.

I was hoping to hear something a bit more definitive. I too don't think that is the press release that BEEF magazine was referring to. I hope that Mr. Bullard can explain what was or wasn't said and why. If that is a correct quote, I am not sure how that helps support the U.S. cattle producer. I am also not sure how R-CALF's position on the financial reforms and USDA's proposed rule on marketing livestock helps support the cattle producers.

All press releases are on the website at www.r-calfusa.com. The release linked to above is the only one about the Australian trip. Please review other releases if you feel the one linked is the inappropriate release.

That clears it up.
